Maltese National Regatta
The Maltese National Regatta is Malta’s most beloved traditional rowing event.
It takes place in the Grand Harbour, usually on dates such as Freedom Day (March 31) or Victory Day (September 8) when crews from Bormla, Birgu, Senglea, Kalkara and other local clubs compete against each other.
Along the waterfront in Bormla you’ll see large blue and white flags, rowers preparing their boats in the boathouse and locals gathering to watch from balconies.
In recent years, Bormla has won many shields in both youth and senior categories.

The Grand Harbour Regatta dates back to the early 19th century, making it one of Malta’s oldest sporting traditions still celebrated today.

The event is part of the national traditional rowing competition organised by Regatta Malta and features 8 full-member clubs including Bormla Regatta Club (Cospicua), Birgu Regatta Club, Senglea Regatta Club, Kalkara Regatta Club, Marsa Regatta Club, Marsamxett Regatta Club and Siġġiewi Rowing Club.

The Regatta was revived in 1951 in its modern competitive format, following earlier informal races. In 1955 a formal “Aggregate Shield” points system was introduced to determine an overall winner rather than just individual boat races.
