Malta at War Museum

Malta at War Museum is housed in old barrack blocks built into 17th-century fortifications in Cospicua. Beneath the museum there are large air-raid shelter carved into rock.

Inside, you’ll find various galleries of artefacts with uniforms, medals, maps and documents. The shelter below has communal dormitories, a surgery and many small cubicles where families once sheltered during Word War II bombings.

Note that seeing these artefacts is not for everyone and may give you an intense experience with the cruelties of war.

FAQs – Malta at War Museum

  • Plan on about 1 to 1.5 hours to see the galleries and explore the shelter beneath.

  • Open Monday to Saturday, 10:00-16:30 (last admission at 4pm). Adult tickets are ~€14. Seniors and children have reduced price.

  • Yes — there are audio guides and interpretation panels. Some visits include the wartime film “Malta G.C.” as part of the experience.

  • The shelters are restored and safe, but not all areas are very easy for pushchairs or those with mobility issues. Wear comfortable shoes.

  • Yes — it sits in the Three Cities area. After the museum, you can visit Fort St. Angelo or take a walk along the Birgu waterfront.
