Pjazza Indipendenza

Walking down along Archbishop Street towards Triq Marsamxett you will find yourself at this little square. It is a lovely spot to take a break and a couple pictures of Valletta’s iconic architecture.

You have the cupola of the Carmelite Basilica and the tower of St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral right in front of you. And next to the St. John Association building you will find a classic red British phone booth.

From Pjazza Indipendenza (Independence Square) you can walk down the steps to the bay and enjoy the views towards Manoel Island and parts of Gzira.

  • Pjazza Indipendenza is located in Valletta, just off Archbishop Street and near the Anglican St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral. It’s a small square framed by historic buildings and easy to reach on foot from Republic Street.

  • From the square you’ll get views of the cupola of the Carmelite Basilica and the tower of St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral. There’s a classic red British phone booth and limestone townhouses that give the place a charming old-city feel.

  • The square itself is quiet, but there are cafés within one or two minutes walk.

  • From the bus terminal at City Gate, walk up Republic Street and then turn onto Archbishop Street — no car needed.
