The Best Nightclubs in Malta

Laid-back cocktails, live music or high-energy clubbing — Malta’s nightlife is diverse

Malta’s liveliest nightlife hotspot is undoubtedly Paceville, which is being stormed by tourists during high season and busy all year-round. Valletta’s nightlife is catching up since more and more cocktail bars and pubs have opened up recently. And then there is Ta’ Xbiex with trendy locations for afterwork drinks with waterfront views.

Let us take a look at a selection of clubs and bars that we regularly visit ourselves!

Storeroom, Ta’ Xbiex

Storeroom is literally built into a former fishermen’s storage area

Storeroom is a trendy hotspot for those who appreciate live music and underground DJs. Located at the Ta’ Xbiex waterfront, we feel like walking into a hidden jazz bar far off the tourist areas, with a cozy bar downstairs and a gallery above giving you a perfect view of the stage.

Storeroom plays a mix of live music such as jazz, funk and deep electronic beats. We came here to see acts like Belau who play modern electronic music or Exotica Radio who is known for a tropical mix of Samba, Afrofunk and Disco. Jazz lovers would come here for the likes of William Smith & Co. If you are into UK garage and dub you might have heard of Bass Culture, the founders of the local dub and sound system scene have performed here a few times already.

When it’s not too windy people have their drinks outside the club and enjoy the view towards the St John's Co-Cathedral and Valletta. You will still hear Storeroom’s sounds even if you stand at the edge of the waterfront.

Best for: Afterwork drinks, gigs

97 Notes, Valletta

A funky Gonzalo Carcelero session at 97 Notes

At 97 Notes you can either have dinner or listen to live music. We usually go here for events organised by O.G. Hiphop Malta, a group of old school hiphop and RnB enthusiasts that are specialised in black music nights. They literally make you go back in time to the 90s and 2000s. Of course there are different gigs at 97 Note, including rock bands and electronic DJs like Gonzza.

97 Notes is spreading classy vibes and their parties have a real underground feel. And if you are into cocktails, you might as well spend the entire night at one of their bars trying their craft cocktails.

Best for: Live music and craft cocktails

Cafe Society, Valletta

Cafe Society probably serves Valletta’s best cocktails

Cafe Society is a tiny little bar located in one of the side streets off St Paul’s street. You can either sit along their bar inside or outside where they place tables along the steep alley. The vibes are pretty alternative and very often they invite DJs to play electronic music at the back of the club. And of course, their cocktails are delicious such as their winning Agua De Los Perros!

Best for: Relaxed night with cocktails

Havana, Paceville

The iconic Havana nightclub in the heart of Paceville

We haven’t been here for a while, but we loved it when we first moved to Malta. Havana is located right in the centre of Paceville and you should notice the massive neon sign on the building.

If you are looking for a nightclub with a huge dance floor and younger crowds, then Havana is your place to be. Inside you have two floors, the main dance floor and another one with seating. People come here late at night after they already had drinks elsewhere. Therefore Havana can still be packed until late. Their DJs usually play Hiphop and RnB, but check out their website for their DJ schedule.

Best for: Hiphop & RnB lovers looking to party until late

Native Bar, Paceville

Native Bar, Malta’s No. 1 Latino location

At Native Bar you will be able to dance to the latest Latin hits — Reggaeton and Salsa. Malta’s Latin community is growing and at Native you will meet lots of young professionals and language students from Colombia, Brazil or Spain.

You can dance next to the DJ set or in the area behind the bar. Native Bar offers finger food like BBQ chicken wings and has TVs inside and outside the club. I would recommend you come here for a football match, the atmosphere in the entire alley is amazing. Native is located in the “party alley” near the Baystreet View shopping centre.

Best for: Latin beats and energetic vibes
